I have often heard the question asked, "Is God Good?"
When I answer in the affirmative, the follow up tends to be,
"well then why does He allow suffering?" Or even, "Then how can He
send people to Hell?"
It would seem that everyone wants to experience His grace, mercy
and love but no one wants to hear His truth! We want the good and
none of the bad. The Bible clearly says the God is love (1 John
4:8), but it also says that He is a consuming fire (Heb. 12:29).
So if God is good, then how come He punishes those who refuse to
repent? I appreciate this quote from Salvation Army officer, Samuel
Brengle (1860-1936): In his book Love Slaves he writes
that "Fire will not only bake our food, but it will burn us. Water
will not only quench our thirst and refresh us, but if we trifle
with it, it will drown us."
God is good, but He is not to be trifled with. He has given us the
freedom to choose eternal life in Heaven or Hell, to follow or
reject Him. We can accept His wisdom and submit to His will, and live in true joy and peace,
or, we can reject His offer of life in Christ, and pay the eternal
consequences. Holding us accountable for our sins does not negate His
goodness.
God is good, loving, compassionate and slow to anger, but He is
also holy and righteous. We can't continue on a path that breaks
His laws and not expect to be disciplined anymore than we can
continually break man's laws and not expect punishment. I can
choose to obey the law of the land and enjoy the privileges of being a citizen in good standing, or violate those
laws and reap the consequences...the choice is mine but being
punished in the courts is not the fault of the ones who set the
law in place, it is the fault of the lawbreaker.
Is God good? Absolutely.
Is He fair? Undoubtedly.
The question isn't really is God good but Who will I follow and
obey, my own idea of truth or His?
For me, Psalm 84:10 says it best, "Better is one day in your
courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper
in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked."

My Addiction.
I was once an addict.
It started off innocently enough. I was in the 3rd grade. I came across some scented magic markers. Like every other kid in class, I sniffed the various markers. Unlike the rest of my class, I didn't stop. I continued sniffing markers throughout the school year. I huffed at school, I hufffed at home...and before long I became an addict.
It may sound humorous...but it got worse.
My parents caught me huffing markers...but they did not know I was also huffing gasoline. My neighbor caught me inhaling exhaust fumes and my dad put a boot in my backside. I was punished, lectured and addicted. I can't recall how many times I got caught or when I eventually woke up to what I was doing but I was addicted for a couple years.
Some addictions can be bad, even fatal.
Today I am addicted again. This addiction is life changing. It is one that has impacted my whole family. In fact we are all addicts and we don't want to quit.
Recently I asked myself some questions you would ask of an addict:
This time I am addicted to Jesus Christ!
Psalm 84:10, "For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness."
This addiction isn't fatal but it is eternal! It not only changes my life but my future as well. I don't care if people support me or not...I just want more of Jesus. I want to spend time in His presence, in His Word, worshiping day in and day out.
Jesus Christ has changed my life. Believe in Him or not, I KNOW how He has changed my life. I have seen to much to ever turn back. I serve a LIVING, LIFE GIVING, MIRACLE WORKING God!

- Can you hardly wait until you are alone so you can experience the feeling that comes from taking part in the experience?
- Do you find yourself avoiding people because they interfere with your addiction?
- Do you find yourself daydreaming about your habit?
- Do you regularly turn to your habit when you are troubled?
- Do you feel better able to face life after engaging in your habit?
- Do you get upset if you cannot partake in your habit for a long period of time?
- Do you prefer to be with other people who do what you do?
This time I am addicted to Jesus Christ!

Out Of the Mouth of Babes...
"Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise."
Jesus said this in reference to Psalm 8:2 which says, "Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger."
Ok, my son CJ is no longer a baby but he does like to praise! Back in December, shortly before turning four, he wrote a song about Jesus Christ. Sarah put it to music and we have song this little chorus a few times now in church.

You Are Mighty
Oh, Jesus, what a mighty Savior are You!
Jesus, You're a mighty Savior!
Jesus, You are mightier than anything!
Jesus, You're the strongest; Jesus You're the best!
Jesus, You're the strongest; Jesus I love You!
What I think is awesome is that all the words were his. This was a 4-year old's thought about Jesus. We have found the song to be quite addictive and the whole family has been singing it around the house, at work, in the car, etc.
CJ reminds me that we really should have a child like faith when it comes to our Savior. Adults make things so complicated! Jesus is mighty! Jesus I love you! Basic truth from the mouth of a child!
That's the kind of faith I want.

A Good Question
“What does that teach you about God, Daddy?”
This is the question my son has been asking lately. He likes to sing praise and worship
songs. He also likes to make up new
songs about God. Invariably he will end the song and ask what that song has
taught me about God. It is a good question and will often cause me to think,
what IS the meaning of the song and what DOES it teach me about God? It is a great exercise.
I also realized, it is something I never used to ask. I love to sing and will belt out a song
anywhere and at any time. Yes, I am that
guy walking down the street singing to himself.
I will sing at work, in the car and yes, in the shower. Until my son started asking his question, I
never put much thought into what the song was teaching me about God. Now I can’t stop.
I have also begun applying the question to my reading as
well. When I dig into God’s Word, I have
asked myself, “What does this passage of Scripture teach me about God?” According to God’s Word, the Scriptures are
a light for my path (Psalm 119:105) and is useful for teaching, rebuking,
correcting and training. (2 Timothy 3:16)
It is all that and so much more. As I read the Old Testament, I see a God who
is long-suffering and filled with patience and loving kindness. Moving into the New Testament, we see a God
who loved us enough to send His Son to earth, to die on a cross for you and
me!
God’s love, mercy and grace are all things that I have been
taught through the reading of His Word.
My son has challenged me to go deeper in worship and in
reading the Bible. Hopefully you will be
asking yourself this same question he asked me.
“What does that teach you about God?”

Back to the Wall!
Over the years, I have always tried to sit with my back to the wall.
It could have something to do with the fact that, as kid, I was attacked from behind at school. I remember sitting on a ramp near our locker area and feeling a sharp pain near the back of my neck. I woke up on the ground with my back and neck bleeding from cuts made when another kid repeatedly hit me with his cleats.
Whatever the reason, I always liked to sit facing the door. I wanted to see what was coming. I learned to live with one eye open! I felt as if I couldn't trust anyone and had to watch my own back.
Actually, It was a pretty miserable way to live.
My relief came as I began to understand the nature and character of God. I found comfort in a passage from the latter part of Isaiah 52:12. While speaking on deliverance for Israel, Isaiah has this word, "...For the LORD will go before you, And the God of Israel will be your rear guard."
Now that sounds like someone who has your well-being in mind! He goes before them and is their rear guard. We also see from Scriptures that the Lord surrounds us. (Psalms 125:2)
God has my back, my front, my whole being!
Now that is protection you can count on!

Let's Get Real!
Life is hard and sometimes it feels like we are on the losing side.
It's hard to get on top of life's battles. Discouragement and
disillusionment seem to be nipping at our heals.
Let's be honest...that sounds like a typical day for some of us!
This week I was encouraged by a Psalm of lament.
Here is another Scripture with a similar theme.
Habakkuk 3:17- 19, Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.
I remember sitting on my balcony in Croatia years ago. I was in a bit of a funk and looking up, saw dark clouds rolling across the sky. I decided to put down my feelings in a poem. As I neared the end, the sky began to clear.
In the midst of the storm, it is hard to keep our eyes on Jesus. Distractions come to easily. We lose our focus and look at the storm itself. Yet it is only Jesus who can lift us up above the storm and calm the wind and the waves of life.
Sometimes my prayer is simply "Lord I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:23-24)
The great thing about Jesus is He hears and answers those prayers as well!

To the
choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face
from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart
all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer
me, O LORD my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my
enemy say, "I have prevailed over him," lest my foes rejoice because
I am shaken. But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice
in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully
with me. (Psalms 13:1-6)
There was a man who sounded like he was
suffering and yet He trusted in the Lord, the one who restores his soul!

I Need Clear Skies
I
need clear skies
Lord,
I need clear skies
I
need a ray of hope
To start
shining through
The
winds are getting strong
Dark
clouds are rolling in
And
now the rain
The
rain is coming down
Things
don’t look good
A
gloom is setting in
Help
me Lord
Let
it not affect my mood
Off
in the distance
I
see some brighter clouds
Oh
please let them
Start
to come my way
Finally
here they come
Sunshine
is on the way
The
winds are calming
The
rain has gone away
I
see clear skies
Lord,
I see clear skies
I
see a ray of hope
It’s
shining on my heart
I read that poem, thanks to translation
via a Croatian friend, at an evening of poetry and song a few days later.
A lady came up to me afterwards and asked how long after I wrote the poem did I
become a Christian. I told her I wrote it last week! She was
stunned because she was not used to hearing Christians speak of discouragement
and gloom.

I'm Broken!
“I’m Broken.”
After sobbing for 20 minutes, these were the only words that I could say to express the way I was feeling. Broken. I knew it was a lie, yet it was how I was feeling at the moment. My wife, so wonderful through my long struggle with a head injury, continued to speak affirming words and prayed with me before we ended our phone call.
The day started off innocent enough, just going through the normal motions and doing my job. What precipitated this emotional upheaval was looking back. It has been 2 years since my 6th and most significant concussion. After 18 months I finally felt like I was getting back to my “normal” self. I was finally implementing all the tools I had been learning at the Brain Injury Association and had found a medicine that relieved some of my lingering post-concussion symptoms. I had a good month and then, bang, concussion # 7 arrived.
Discouraged, emotional, tired, frustrated and sad would be just a few of the words I would use to describe the way I felt afterwards. I thought I was finally hitting a stride, only to stumble and falter as I continued the race of recovery. I made the mistake in the midst of this emotional upheaval of looking back at things I had written and done last year. Where I thought I was doing well, I realize now I was not nearly as “recovered” as I had assumed. I more “maintained” than anything else at work. I made mistakes, simple mistakes that I should have caught, and began beating myself up.
As I returned to work, the Lord reminded me of a prayer I prayed a few years back. I had been studying the passage of Scripture where Jacob wrestles with the Lord. (Gen. 32:22-32) He came away with a blessing and a limp. I prayed that the Lord would take me deeper, whatever the cost and make me more dependent on Him. Shortly after that, I acquired concussion 6 and then 7. I have spent the last 2 years learning to cope and accept what has happened to me. I saw the blessings in my situation. Sarah and I had many a conversation about how God has used these concussions to change me for the better in my walk with Him and my relationships with others. I have become more contemplative, reflective and still, listening in ways I never have before. I have found a heart of compassion for those suffering with head injuries and mental health issues.
In all of that I have been blessed….but until recently, I ignored the limp. I knew it was there but I never really “grieved” over what happened. I have suffered a loss. I have a “limp” called an acquired brain injury. It hit me recently that I will, barring a healing from God, never be the same again. Yet in that grief, I also see how I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13) Despite the loss, I am still a new creation in Christ Jesus. (2 Cor. 5:17) Yes I have lost much, but I have gained so much more. I can count all things as loss (Phil. 3:8) and look to Jesus Christ and Him crucified! (1 Cor. 2:2) I am honestly not ready to “rejoice” in my situation but I am ready to acknowledge God is still using, leading and guiding me. Darkness may last for a night but there truly is joy in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
Night is ending and I see the cracks of dawn.
For now, I can rejoice in that.

I Wil Draw Near
My beautiful wife never ceases to amaze me. She wrote this worship song last week for our upcoming Sunday service. Preceding the song will be Scriptures that contributed to her thought process. I include those passages here and encourage you to spend time looking them up.
Here are the words to her song:
I Will Draw Near
Fountain of Life, flow
over me
'till I'm filled with Your
glory
Spirit renew the fire that
once drew
me into the Holy of Holies
And I will draw near, as I
wait here
I will return to my Father
My heart of stone, I lay
at Your throne
That I may know You and be
known
The sound of Your voice,
fills me with joy
You turn sorrow to
gladness
You don't disappoint, You
never leave
and I am changed in Your
presence
So I will draw near, as I
wait here
I will return to my Father
My heart of stone, I lay
at Your throne
That I may know You and be
known
Only in You are justice
and truth
and mercy binds me to You
How high are Your
thoughts, How great are Your ways
Your covenant is my peace
Bridge:
You satisfy my soul with
good
You bought my freedom with
Your blood
Your fire consumes my sin
You captivate my heart
So, I will draw near, as I
wait here
I will return to my Father
My heart of stone, I lay
at Your throne
That I may know you and be
known

You Can't Measure Forever
My son is at an age where he is trying to quantify and measure things. His big thing right now is trying to figure out time. He uses his hands to measure out what he thinks you mean by a half hour, an hour, etc. He keeps using the word 'forever' as well when he wants something to continue. So when he was playing with his sister, he mentioned the word 'forever' and spread his hands wide. My daughter said to him, "You can't measure forever!"
I heard that comment and was immediately impressed by the wisdom of that statement.
We can't measure forever. Keep that in mind as you look at Psalm 100:5 which says, "The LORD is good. His mercy endures forever. His faithfulness endures throughout every generation"
I thank God that His mercy does last forever. I stand in need of His mercy and grace. The fact that God is eternal and His mercies are everlasting give me cause to sing with joy! In fact if you read all of Psalm 100, it speaks of just that:
A psalm of thanksgiving. "Shout happily to the LORD, all the earth. Serve the LORD cheerfully. Come into his presence with a joyful song. Realize that the LORD alone is God. He made us, and we are his. We are his people and the sheep in his care. Enter his gates with a song of thanksgiving. Come into his courtyards with a song of praise. Give thanks to him; praise his name. The LORD is good. His mercy endures forever. His faithfulness endures throughout every generation."
I can't read that passage without getting excited.
There is so much here but I want to point out just a few things.
Serve the Lord cheerfully - We shouldn't act as if serving God is like pulling teeth. We should do so cheerfully. In fact we should do EVERYTHING as unto the Lord. (Colossians 3:23) We should do whatever we put our hands to with a cheerful heart. In fact, it's good for us to do so! (Proverbs 17:22)
He Made Us - God is the creator of everything. People can debate the age of the earth and how we came into existence but the Bible says God did it. That's good enough for me.
We are His - God sent His Son and purchased us with a price, His own Sons life. I am glad that I recognized and accepted that gift.
We are His people, the sheep in His care - I praise God He truly does care for us, watches over us and guides us with His voice, His Word and His provision.
Yes the Lord is good and we have a reason to sing! We can't measure forever, but I am glad that I have the chance to spend forever with Him!

God of Wonders
God is so amazing.
"How great are His signs, how mighty His wonders! (Daniel 4:3a)
How mighty His wonders. I like that. I remember visiting Niagara Falls a few years back. My daughter wanted to go on the Maid of the Mist boat ride which takes you up to the base of the water falls. Now I hate boats but, being a dad, I went along for the ride.
I must say I was not only impressed, I was awestruck!
To see the power of the falls up close left me amazed at the God of wonders and His creativity.
The great thing about God is that not only is He a God of wonders but He is a God who works wonders as well.
"You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples." (Psalm 77:14)
He is a God who provides, heals and guides! He works mighty miracles and still moves today! I have seen first hand the healing power of God. My family has experienced God's provision and guidance first hand.
What has God done in your life?
I believe the wonders of the Lord should cause us to draw closer to Him. We should delight in drawing closer to the Lord. (Isaiah 58:2)
In fact we are promised that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. (James 4:8)
Why not draw near to the God of wonders today.

God is...? - Just A Thought #56
Here's a challenge. When you see the phrase, "God is...?", how do
you complete that sentence? What were the first words that came to
your mind?
How you answered might say a lot about where you are right now in your walk with the Lord.
Did you say God is good?
I know many people who have said that. One person told me recently that they know He is good but they don't always feel He is good. Their head says yes, their heart says I don't know. The question becomes, does God have my best interest at heart? The truth can be pointed out through the Scriptures but when the rubber meets the road, do we truly believe it in our hearts and live it out in practice?
Did you say God is great?
What does that mean to you? Great at what? Or is great defined as "having considerable power?" If God is great, how does that effect the way we live?
Did you say God was loving?
God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. (John 3:16) Do we feel that love? We may know that we are loved but do we really believe it? Do we live as though we know God truly cares about our needs?
All these questions and it all goes back to one thing in my opinion. Do we trust God to be the God of all? Do we believe He truly is fair, loving, kind and filled with truth, or is He only those things when we get our own way?
Proverbs 3:5 says we are to trust in the Lord with ALL of our hearts and not to trust in our own wisdom or way of understanding things.
We may not feel it, we may not truly believe it, but it does not negate this truth:
"For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations." (Psalm 100:5)
Be encouraged.

Crying Out
Psalm 84:2, "My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry out for the Living God."
Crying Out
On Bended Knee
I bow my head
My heart to full to cry
The life I've lived
I now proclaim
I give it all to God
I'm humbled now
Before the King
The tears begin to fall
The pain I felt
I'm letting go
Before the throne of God
Oh I love to contemplate Him
And to seek the face of God
Oh I want to bow and worship
Crying out to the living God
My soul anew
In love with God
I cry out to the King
I love You Lord
You are my God
Ruler of everything
Oh I love to contemplate Him
And to seek the face of God
Oh I want to bow and worship
Crying out to the living God
This was the piece I mentioned when I said I was looking for words. I have been spending more and more time in worship and this is where I personally feel like I am right now.

Looking for Words
I was sitting in my chair reading a book when the phrase bounced into my head.
I knew it was the start of something. I immediately grabbed a pen and wrote the phrase down on a blank sheet of paper. (I always do this, capturing the idea as it comes so as to not lose it.
As I started writing, more words came jumbling out. Some lines seemed to tuck in nicely with the above phrase, some were just brainstorming words and phrases that at first did not seem connected.
I put the pen down and went to bed.
Laying there, I repeated the opening phrase to Sarah and something clicked and I jumped out of bed, ran to the living room and wrote a complete section.
I picked it up again today while contemplating Psalm 84:2, "My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God."
I have labored over this piece longer than many things that I write. It feels like I am missing a word, a phrase to tie it all together.
So I am looking for words, and yet through the search, the journey I am taking as I re-read these lines I have on paper, I find myself focusing even more on the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
From haphazard scribbles is coming a desire to know Him more.
What leads you into His presence?

An Act of God! - Just A Thought #54
I heard the term, Act of God, quite a bit this past
week. It was used in the media to
explain hurricane damage, floods and earthquakes. I even heard it used to describe a crane
being bent in half by the wind and dangling 750 feet (228 meters) in the
air.
Two things went through my mind while watching these broadcasts. One, I did not know so many people in the
media believed in God. Two, why does God
not get recognized for all the good things He does?
I know that an “act of God” is legalese for any act which is
outside human control and therefore not the responsibility of any individual or
corporation.
I also know it is always defined as a bad thing, like a
tornado!
God gets a bad rap!
I want to see God’s children redefine an act of God. Let’s take this phrase and turn it on its ear
because when I wake up each morning, I consider that an act of God!
“I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained
me.” Psalm 3:5
I look out my window, see the sunshine and the rain, the
snow and the stars at night, and I see an act of God.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1
“In his hand are the deep places of the earth, and the
mountain peaks are his. The sea is his. He made it, and his hands formed the
dry land.” Psalm 95:4-5
We take the good things for granted and blame God for the
bad. God did not create the chaos we see
around us. He provided a way out. (John 3:16)
We blame God for death, mayhem and destruction. How often do we thank Him for our very life?
The next time you walk outside; why not stop for a moment
and thank God for His mighty act of creation.

Everyone Has A Story
For the past six years I have worked with the Salvation Army. I have seen a lot over these 6 years, not all
of it pretty. I’ve learned a lot as
well.
One thing I have learned is to listen for the story.
There is a cynicism that has crept into our society where we
act like everyone on the street is a substance abuser, makes the wrong choices
and “has an excuse (story)” for their actions.
I have learned how far from the truth that really is.
It’s true, some of the “street” people abuse substances and
make other poor choices, but many have suffered sickness, got behind on a bill
or were laid off when the company downsized due to a poor economy. Lest we forget though, ALL were created in
the image of God. (Genesis 1:27)
“Rich and poor have
this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.” Proverbs 22:2
When we walk down the street and see those in need, do we
see God’s image in the person we try to ignore?
Do we see the image of God in the poor, the needy, and yes, even the
substance abuser?
How often do we think about the soul of the man or woman on
the street?
I will say this, God thinks of them DAILY! (Psalm 139)
He loved them enough to send His Son for them. (John 3:16)
Can we not stop and hear their story?
I mentioned that I have learned to listen to the story. It isn’t always easy but with practice, we
can look beyond the symptoms and listen to what is going on in the heart of the
down-and-out person. A cup of coffee with
a stranger may place us outside of our comfort zone for a moment, but it can
change a life forever.
These are my neighbors.
This is my mission field.
Will you listen to someone’s story this week?

Faith Matters
Life is filled with incredible highs and discouraging
lows. One moment we seem to be having
the best day ever, but the next minute we can come crashing down to earth. The ups and downs of life are enough to give
us emotional whiplash.
This, to me, is why faith matters. I personally need the steadying influence
that only Jesus Christ can offer. Jesus
has this to say in Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all who are tired from
carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.”
Who doesn’t crave rest?
We run around to and fro, trying to get more and more done each day, yet
it seems we never catch up. In fact, we
seem to slip further behind. Everyone
seems tired and exhausted and a day “off” seems to be more of a myth than a
reality.
In Psalm 46:10 we are encouraged to be
still and know that He is God. How can
we be still?
Well, if we look at the example of Jesus in the New
Testament, we see that He would go away to the mountains. He would go off by Himself to pray and
rest.
I believe we need to intentionally retreat at times. It might mean going for a hike, a walk or a
bike ride. We might need a stroll by the
river, or just to lay down on the couch and veg! It is possible to prioritize rest.
The second part of that Scripture is to know that He is God! To know something is to understand it with
clarity and certainty. How do we know
God? Scripture says, “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed
is the man who takes refuge in him.” (Psalm 34:8)
Why not stop for a moment, read the Bible and pray to the
Lord? Maybe you too will see that faith
matters.

Confessions of a Lapsed Blogger
I love to write.
When this thing first started I stepped in a bit tentatively but over time I found a rhythm. I originally used this site to house my Just A Thoughts with an occasional devotional thrown in. After awhile, I decided to add book reviews, interviews, etc.
I used to blog like crazy. I increased my posting rate to every 2-3 days. It became an obsession.
It became an idol.
I cut back last year and posted less.
This year I have cut down on my posts again.
Part of that was business at work, part because I was working on a book. The book is now completed and yet I have been hesitant to jump back in here. Life has just been to crazy.
I've also been thinking a lot about eternity.
Not in a maudlin sense. I've just been meditating on Psalm 90:12, "So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom."
I have spent this last bit seeking God as to what He would have me do next and blogging has just not been on the list.
I am not done writing. I am chewing on other book ideas while finding more joy in teaching and preaching lately.
Pray for me.

Where Am I?
No, I am not playing the Rick version of Where's Waldo.
I am just in a different place right now.
It started with the word I felt the Lord gave me for 2012. Prayer.
I started talking to the Father a bit more and the more I prayed, the more relaxed I felt. 2011 was a year of stress but 2012 has definitely been a year of refreshing. In fact I have had people stop me and tell me that I look more relaxed and at peace.
I've also had people ask what was wrong with me...because I have been a bit more quiet and contemplative as well. I am a talker and when a talker doesn't talk, people get uncomfortable and ask if the talker is ok.
Mark 6:30-32 says, "The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place."
I have felt the call to come away to a solitary place and get some rest. I couldn't leave my job but I have pulled back and just spent timer mentally refreshing with the Lord.
As Psalm 23 puts it: He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul;
I have to say, it has been nice.
Part of my refreshing meant I was also away from my blog even more than last year. Besides the occasional book review, compassion post or interview I have been largely silent. (no loss I know)
I expect I will post a bit more now.
When was the last time you felt refreshed?

Markers Along the Way
Looking back over my Christian walk, I see some markers along the way. They are Bible verses that became my "life verse" for a time. Ones that spoke to where I was at in my journey with the Lord. It started off as a new believer. That first Christmas, my Mom purchased me a little desktop plaque that quoted Prov. 3:5-6. This verse says "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."
I was 14 and trying o figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I kept going back to that verse over and over through my teens and 20's.
Gal. 2:20 says "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Around the age of 29 this verse took on fresh meaning for me as I became more aware of my identity in Christ. This marked a time of new beginnings as my faith went deeper and the Lord strengthened and redeemed a struggling marriage.
Psalm 61:1-2 says "Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
I think I found my new favorite verse. As I posted earlier, 2011 was rough and this is the verse I have been meditating on this year. I keep going back to it over and over and over.
What are the mile-marker verses in your life?
