Coming to Life!
Though I grew up loving the Muppet Show, I never thought about actually operating puppets myself. Sure, there was that one time in Croatia where I did a puppet show at an orphanage with a friend but that was an isolated incident.
Until now.
After discussions on new ways to capture the little kids' attention at church, we decided to give a puppet a try.
I brought home the puppet (the one in the picture) and began looking for a voice. My four-year-old sat with me and kept weighing in on the various voices. He made for a tough audience and shot down nearly every voice I came up with. I finally found one to his liking, and that's when "Hank" came to life.
As soon as Hank started talking, my son completely ignored me and began talking to the puppet. He asked lots of questions, told him stories, and made it clear that Dad was just an appendage on the end of the puppet's body. After a time of interaction and engagement I said that Hank needed to go to sleep, at which point my son began talking to me again!
This morning I began discussing how to use the puppet at church. I wanted to talk about fear and mentioned how it would be good to have Hank learn a verse about fear. Immediately, my four-year-old piped up and said, How about "Do not fear, for the Lord is with you?"
Recognizing the paraphrase of Joshua 1:9, I was excited that my son was able to recall a Bible verse applicable to fear and was able to use it appropriately. He will now teach Hank that verse in church this week.
Maybe this puppet thing won't be so bad after all!

Jesus Loves Me This I Know
I have been singing this children's hymn for over a week now. Like any ear-worm, it has buried itself deep and I have even woken up in the middle of the night with the song on my lips. However, this simple but profound song isn't driving me crazy, it's driving me deeper into the Word of God!
I found a definition of love that I have been using as a baseline as I read various scriptures on the topic.
Love - It is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.
Tender and passionate. That is the kind of Love I believe the Lord exhibits towards us on a continual basis. It is that passionate love that caused God to send His only Son to die for us! It was that kind of love that caused Jesus to submit His will to the Father in the garden of Gethsemane. A sacrificial love!
"And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." (Ephesians 5:2)
One of the most encouraging Scriptures to me is found in Romans 8:
The key to experiencing that love is relationship with Him! Recognizing and accepting the work he did on the cross!

The Baby Mobile Illustration
I never put much thought into baby mobiles before. However, I was consulting with my friend at the Brain Injury Association (Where I am a client in good standing) and she used a baby mobile to talk about how brain injuries impact everyone in the family. Her point was that if you touch one of the pieces hanging down, all will move and sway. In that vein, my head injury has caused sway and movement in my family as we have all had to learn coping skills and balance in this new reality.
So what does that have to do with the Body of Christ?
I was reading 1 Corinthians the other day and came across this verse in chapter twelve:
"And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it." (1 Corinthians 12:26)
I was reminded of the baby mobile illustration when I read this.
Sin, that thing we try to hide from others, once revealed, (and let's be honest, it's always revealed), can cause others to suffer as well. What we do in secret can negatively impact not only us, but everyone around us. Even a "simple" lie complicates all of our relationships.
Sickness, pain, fear, you name it... can cause all around us to be shaken and rocked to our core.
The same holds true for positive things as well.
One person in a family becoming a Christian will cause people around them to contemplate their own relationships (or lack thereof) with Christ. Joy is contagious and as your spirits are lifted, you will also lift the spirits of those around you.
The choices we make can shake our foundations, sometimes to the very core. They can also change our lives and the lives of those around us.
I like Joshua's challenge to the people of Israel:
"And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)
We all make choices; why not make a choice to live a life pleasing to God?
Then when those around us are moved, it will be for the glory of God!

Why Men Cheat
Despite what some ministers and authors may tell you, the real reason men cheat can be boiled down to one, three letter word.
The reason: SIN
Let me give you some background to why I am writing about this.
Last week I came across a video clip of Pat Robertson answering a question on his show, the 700 Club. I will go ahead and post it here.
Now, as much as I disagree with Pat Robertson, he is not the first minister or author I have heard who has laid the blame for husbands cheating at the feet of the wife. I almost didn't post the video because I did not want o focus on Robertson himself, but on this viewpoint in general.
A few things come to mind when I hear this line of thinking that women should do more for their husbands so they won't stray.
First, it's not Scriptural. There is no Scriptural justification to the line of thinking that a man strays because the women is not keeping the "home fires burning." Let me point out a passage of Scripture that addresses why men cheat. It is found in the book of Genesis. Eve has believed the enemies lies and eats the fruit God forbid them to eat. Adam then CHOSE to eat that fruit as well. Adam made a choice. He CHOSE to disobey God.
Men, and women for that matter, cheat because they make a CHOICE to disobey God and to no longer stay faithful to their spouse. That choice to sin cannot be laid at anyone else's door.
Secondly, to blame the women for a husbands moral failure does a disservice to the victim. I wish more Christians would practice active listening instead of feeling the need to run off at the mouth and blame the victim of someone else's sinful choices.
Finally, by saying that men have a tendency to wander, as Pat Robertson implied, is just plain offensive. Not every man chooses or is tempted to sin in this way. However, we all (men and women) are tempted to sin.
"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." 1 Corinthians 10:13
That way out is to turn to the Father! It is to run to the King of Kings, dig into His Word, and to pray without ceasing. Surround yourself with other believers and seek their prayers as well. When one is finding satisfaction in Christ, he won't need to search elsewhere for satisfaction.
"But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15
The choice is yours.

Hitting the Wall
Following the journey and drawing comparisons between their journey and our own walk with the Lord, I have tried to draw out elements that can be used as a parallel.
This week I was going to talk about Jericho. Then I hit a wall. I encountered my own Jericho in the midst of preparing this message. My Jericho is fear. A wall of fear has been built up in my life that seems to stand strong and impenetrable in the midst of the Promised Land.
While enjoying the blessings God has provided, I still have this thing...this fortress to the enemy. I know when the wall was built, I know the history of this enemy camp....yet long has been the siege against it.
So this week I have been doing battle.
I look at what the Israelites did when they crossed the Jordan. They built a memorial to the Lord. I have been looking back at my own memorials. Remembering and celebrating what the Lord has done in the past in my life, particularly in these areas.
I am also looking at how the walls of Jericho came down....the people worshiped and sought the Lord but he did the work. They had to operate out of faith. I've been trying to do that. Praying more, seeking the Lord, worshiping. I am recalling Scriptures like 2 Tim. 1:7 and trying to stand on faith.
I believe the walls are starting to crumble. However I want to stand on guard, to keep at it...I know that after Jericho falls, there was still Ai. The Israelites let sin in the camp and got their hat handed to them by the enemy. I need to stand on faith but also to walk in victory!

Age is Relative
You are never too young, too old, too uneducated, too poor, or too busy to serve the Lord!
I wasn’t much older than 20 when I was asked to be a youth pastor. I was the missions director of my church at 15. When I was 21, I traveled with an itinerant evangelist in his late 70’s. I could not keep up with his energy!
It is a sad, but true fact, that over the years, the church has relegated the young and the aged to the pews and youth groups. I have heard numerous stories of people who were told that they needed to be older in order to serve God. I have also seen the elderly members of a church ignored when it came to ministry opportunities.
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:9-10)
How can we do good? By serving others, by loving others and by sharing the truth of Jesus Christ. For that job description, age doesn’t matter.
And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and for going and coming. So now give me this hill country of which the LORD spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the LORD said." (Joshua 14:10-12)
The Bible talks of two kings: Joash who assumed the throne at the age of seven; and Josiah who became king at the age of eight. The Bible says that both of them obeyed the Lord. (2 Kings 12:2, 2 Kings 22:2)
Nor do you need to be educated to serve God. True Biblical education happens when you leave the Bible College, the missionary training school, etc… . It happens just like it did for the apostles…when you rub up against the world. Remember that Peter and a few of the others were just plain old, uneducated fishermen. Yet God used these uneducated men to change the world!
I am not knocking education; however, any education or lack thereof, is not an excuse to sit idly by on the sidelines and hope others will share the love of Jesus Christ. Any one at any age can and should do that. The Great Commission is for all of us!

All By Myself
What I mean by that is that there is a noticeable difference when my family isn't around. The normal hustle and bustle of our house has ceased as I hang with our dog, not the best conversationalist.
It goes beyond that though. Somethings missing. I can feel it.
I am by myself.
I don' like it!
I crave relationship...the relationship with my family. I want to spend time with them and when we aren't together I feel off...like my world is not in sync.
I feel the same way when my relationship with God isn't where it should be. His Word says He will never leave us or forsake us.
Deuteronomy 31:6 - "Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you."
Joshua 1:5 - No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.
1 Kings 8:57 - May the Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers. May He not leave us nor forsake us,
1 Chronicles 28:20 -And David said to his son Solomon, "Be strong and of good courage, and do it; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God-my God-will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you, until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord.
Hebrews 13:5 - Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
I am never truly alone...yet even though He doesn't leave us...If I don't spend time with Him, in His presence, communicating...then just like I feel with my wife being gone...I will notice something is off.
It's not a fun feeling. When I am not firing on all cylinders in my relationship with God I notice it...and it feels miserable.
Thankfully my wife is coming home soon....and one day I will go home to be with the Father...I look forward to both!

Wild Abandonment!
We live in an age of false passion. People fall in and out of lust and feel this is passion. However I am talking about a longing that aches to be quenched. A pursuing of your desired to the point of wild abandonment!
I am talking about the Lord! Is that scandalous? Sacrilege? No, it's Biblical!
There are 5 verses in Deuteronomy that speak of giving yourself completely to the Lord. Deuteronomy 6:5 talks about loving the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and might! Deuteronomy 10:12; 11:13; 13:3 and 30:6 all talk about loving the Lord and serving Him with all our heart and soul!
If I was to give myself completely to the Lord in that way, the way He desires, it would require me to do it fully. Not half-hearted attempts at love but to dive in to the point that my head is swimming!
Later in Joshua 22:5 it mentions clinging to the Lord and loving him and serving Him with all our soul!
Jesus also talks about this passionate, wild love. In Mark 12:30 Jesus talks about loving the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. He is saying we are to love the Lord
completely! Without reservations. Without second thoughts! Without restraint!
Are you scared yet? Excited? Wild Abandonment is scary, exciting and intoxicating! Can we let go so completely that we allow God to fill our every fiber? Can we burn with passion for Him? Do we want to?
Ashamedly I am not there yet but I want to be. I love the Lord but know that things hold me back from letting go completely. I want to desire God to the point where nothing else truly matters. I want to give Him all my cares and to cling to Him fully! I want to give myself to Him completely!

Taught to Count
Psalm 90:12 "So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."
Death is not an easy subject to talk about. This year Sarah and I have had a few relatives pass away. When I returned from my vacation I found out an 80 year old co-worker had just had a stroke. (She is recovering thanks to the Lord.) These things were on my mind when the Lord brought to my attention this verse.
Why is it we fear death? Oh we may not admit it but many believers don't want to talk about the subject at all. I read this verse and it challenged me. The challenge was that Jesus Christ could return at any time or He could call me home at any time so I should "number" my days and be about His business. This isn't to be pessimistic. The reality is though we are all drawing closer to either our death or His return.
The time for not taking our walk, our faith seriously is over. God requires us to focus on Him, worship Him, seek Him with our whole hearts. People around us are dying every day and many don't know Him. How can we sit on the sidelines?
Our faith should be so real, so evident that our youth are called to a deeper walk with Him, our neighbours want what we have and people are left with the impression that we do serve a LIVING God.
It is time to make a choice. As Joshua said "Choose you this day who you will Serve...as for me and my house we will serve the Lord."

Are We Being Led?
